PG-43: Music
10. I Won't Be Eatin' Leftovers in Heaven
(PG-43)
If you haven't experienced a slightly under-funded childhood, you probably at least know of someone who has. Some of those youngsters might have coped with their plight by holding on to lessons learned in Sunday school. It's a Boomer-age tradition to close each gig with a gospel song. This is an attempt to honor that practice.
LYRICS
It was Sunday school in May when I heard the teacher say
Our reward is in the great beyond
So I asked him if he might know what heaven's like
And would it be everything I'd want
He said God promises it's perfect happiness
Heaven's whatever you want it to be
Now if that's really true, two things will be taboo
If they're gonna leave it up to me
I won't be eatin' leftovers in heaven
And I ain't gonna wear no hand-me-downs
All my food is comin' hot out of the oven
And I'll be buyin' all my clothes up town
No I won't be eatin' leftovers in heaven
If they're gonna leave it up to me
I couldn't wait to tell my mom as soon as she got home
From cooking down at Billy Bob's cafe
She'd bring home what hadn't sold, never much and always cold
Keepin' us alive to eat another day
I told her what I learned - She needn't be concerned
I'd be happy for eternity
I won't need to eat what's froze or wear my cousin's clothes
If they're gonna leave it up to me
I won't be eatin' leftovers in heaven
And I ain't gonna wear no hand-me-downs
All my food is comin' hot out of the oven
And I'll be buyin' all my clothes up town
No I won't be eatin' leftovers in heaven
If they're gonna leave it up to me
If they're gonna leave it up to me
