9. Like A Man
(PG-43)
I was talking to a gentleman of my parents' generation one day on the phone. He was indeed a gentleman as well as the traditional man's man by criteria accepted by guys everywhere. Unbeknownst to him, during that converstation he taught me what it means to be a real man. When he needed some additional information to answer one of my questions, he beckoned me to "hold a second while he asked his beautiful bride." They had been married about 50 years. That bit of wisdom needed to be heralded with a song.
LYRICS
Grandpa was a man's man - Made a livin' with his hands
While Grandma stayed at home - to raise the kids - he ruled his kingdom - like a man
He was military tough - Expected nothing less from us
We'd do anything he'd say - and just the way - that he would do it - like a man
But he made sure we knew one thing - Our grandma was his queen
And she was the only reason he felt - like a man
From the day that they were wed - he lived up to what he'd said
He had always loved and cherished her - like a man
With his final breath - he told her - that he loved her
With his last ounce of strength - he squeezed her hand
A tear fell from Grandma's eye - as she said - our love will never die
And with a tender kiss good-bye - he died - like a man
Grandpa'd been a tough young man - A football All American
Then barely twenty-four - he went to war - and served his country - like a man
A home town favorite son - Elected every time he'd run
But he had to have the hand - of Carol Ann - to feel completely - like a man
But she made sure he knew one thing - She did not need a king
She needed someone strong and gentle - like a man
On the day that they were wed - he took her hand and said
He would always love and cherish her - like a man
With his final breath - he told her - that he loved her
With his last ounce of strength - he squeezed her hand
A tear fell from Grandma's eye - as she said - our love will never die
And with a tender kiss good-bye - he died - like a man
I N S T R U M E N T A L I N T E R L U D E
With his final breath - he told her - that he loved her
With his last ounce of strength - he squeezed her hand
A tear fell from Grandma's eye - as she said - our love will never die
And with a tender kiss good-bye - he died - like a man
He died - like a man
